On the 11th August 2006, Peter Henderson and his dad set out for the Lake District, with the intention of climbing one or two of the main mountains and getting out into the wild country. Their plan was to create a base at a cottage in Wasdale, a quiet valley in the west of Cumbria, and from there to see if the weather would allow them to achieve their main objective: Scafell Pike. As this is the wettest place in England, they knew that they could not rely on good weather. But as things turned out, they were to be extremely lucky with the weather, and achieved far more than they had initially planned. It was a perfect holiday, and everything seemed to go right. The initial plan was to travel by train to Cumbria and stay at a guesthouse in Eskdale, before walking to Gosforth the next day, and buying all the food they would need for the next seven days. Then they would travel on to Wasdale Head where they were staying at Burnthwaite Farm, crouched right beneath Kirk Fell, and the last building on the path towards the highest mountains in England. They couldn't get any closer to the mountains they hoped to ascend. Time would tell how they got on. Read on to find out... |
