Introduction

On the 7th August 2007, Peter Henderson and his dad were once again setting off for an adventure in mountain country. The previous year they had enjoyed good weather in the Lake District where they had stayed at a farm in Wasdale. This year they would head north to Scotland and travel around a bit more. The plan was to cross Rannoch Moor, do some walking in Glencoe, then hike south to Bridge of Orchy, catch the train to Fort William, and achieve their main objective: Ben Nevis. During a week in the heather they enjoyed a mixture of stunning summer weather, rain and mist, peat bogs and scrambles. It was a wilder, more challenging environment but they were fit and succeeded in overcoming the elements, often with heavy packs.

They planned to start at Rannoch Station, and cross Rannoch Moor, the greatest expanse of moorland in Britain. This is a bleak and boggy wasteland and can be arduous. It takes you far from the road into utter solitude. Then they would stay in Glencoe and explore in the mountains. These peaks are wild and dramatic, and serious undertakings. After that they planned to take the drovers' road to Bridge of Orchy, before turning their attention north to the mountain simply known as "The Ben". Would the weather be kind to them? Would they be fit enough? Read on to find out...
